A new Leonard Cohen movie!

I don't know if this is old news, but in Leonard's case, I could hear the same news over and over and still be ecstatic.

Amy Phillips reports:
Mel Gibson is a bigger Leonard Cohen fan than you are. Yup, Mel Gibson is such a big Leonard Cohen fan that he executive produced a movie about him: Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man, due in theaters June 21. What have you done for Leonard Cohen lately, huh?

Part documentary and part concert film, I'm Your Man centers around a January 2005 Australian tribute concert, "Came So Far for Beauty", organized by producer Hal Willner and featuring performances by Antony, Nick Cave, Jarvis Cocker, Rufus Wainwright, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson, the Handsome Family, Julie Christensen, and Perla Battala. Cohen himself performs "Tower of Song" with U2.

    Anybody else seen it?
I'm new to this tribe, and since I saw the movie last weekend I've been re-obsessed with Mr. Cohen, though I will admit I was a little disappointed with the film. The interviews are super cool, and the stories that Nick Cave and Rufus Wainwright tell are entertaining and enlightening. It was the MUSIC that was disappointing. Who were all those people performing his songs? I hear that it was something of a family affair, the production team was. They sure could have found more notable artists -- and wider ranging in genre -- than what they presented.

Personally I would have liked to have seen a "punkster" as Mr. Cohen called them, interpret one of his songs. Instead it was strings and a saw for every song.

Still love him. Still think he's one of the greatest songwriters of the era. Just disappointed in the movie.

I've been a Cohen fan for many years. Unlike Johnny, I rather enjoyed the film despite my initial unfamiliarity with a number of the artists performing Leonard's work. In fact, I was impressed enough with several of the renditions to run out and buy the movie soundtrack (a move that's out of character for me).

Johnny, you're entitled to like or dislike the performers' work in the film as you see fit. But you might be surprised if you did a little research into the backgrounds of the people involved. If you did, you would find two ladies who sang backup for Leonard when he was touring.

In terms of "punksters", have a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Cave. I thnk you will find that Cave has bona fide credentials in this genre.

From my own standpoint, there was one performer I would have really like to have seen in the film, Anjani Thomas. For those of you Cohen fans who would like to hear something more current from the maestro himself, you might want to dig up a copy of Anjani's "Blue Alert" CD.

Hey Richard, thanks for the factoid about the singers. I would have liked to have known that while watching the movie. I wonder why they didn't interview thme? They must have a pretty interesting of Cohen.

I didn't DISlike any of the songs in particular in the movie. I just found the repitition rather dull -- every song was recorded at the same concert with the singers walking on and off stage between songs. Taken on the whole it lacked creativity. For example, the saw. The saw is a gimmick. It's a cool sound, but if you overuse it, it loses its impact. The first time I heard it, I thought, 'cool sound.' The second time, I thought, 'there's the saw again.' Third and subsequent times I was annoyed.

As for Nick Cave, he certainly has the punk cred, but his cover of "I'm Your Man" (which was awesome) was a long way from punk rock.

Performer I woul dhave liked to have seen performing: Tom Waits.
