In addition to being a gigantic Leonard Cohen, I'm also a gigantic Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds fan. He's one of the few musicians I have heard who is remotely in Cohen's league in the lyrics department.
For any restless LC fans looking for something new, if you haven't heard them, I highly recommmend checking out The Boatman's Call, and/or his new album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus.
I'm also on my way to becoming a big Iron and Wine fan:
God, there is gold buried deep in the ground
God, there's a hangman that wants to come round
How we rise when we're born like the ravens in the corn
On their wings on our knees crawling careless from the sea,
God, give us love in the time that we have.

Re: Nick Cave and others
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 8:58 PMive heard quite a few Nick Cave albums over the years and am always left thinking that he suffers from poor lyrics. i like the song style and his voice but the lyrics leave alot to be desired, whereas with LC, the lyrics are what keeps me listening.
i've been enjoying some Elliott Smith lately.
i would like to hear more from Iron & Wine. -

Re: Nick Cave and others
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 11:41 AMHave you tried The Boatman's Call? It's very different from Cave's earlier albums, although the lyrics still aren't up to Cohen's level. It's much less gory than some of his other albums, though.
And how about their respective books - And the Ass Saw the Angel and Beautiful Losers? Any thoughts?
I found them both fairly disturbing, but at least Beautiful Losers had a lot more going for it. And the Ass Saw the Angel still gives me nightmares... -

Re: Nick Cave and others
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 11:37 AMIf you like Nick Cave & Leonard Cohen...I MUST recommend two Denver bands...Slim Cessna's Auto Club & Jay Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots...Jay Munly is also the lead/side man of Slim Cessna's Auto Club. I just have no words to describe how fantastic these two bands are...here is a review on Munly's new album released this year...
"It almost does this album a disservice to try and describe it. Rest assured whatever adjectives I pull out of my hat, they will be insufficient to adequately capture what is pouring out of my speakers right now.
Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots is an album of larger-than-life proportions. It sounds as if the most grandiose and verbose goth band the scene has ever know decided that what the world of goth rock really needed was a folk band steeped in the traditions of bluegrass.
This haunting opus is both otherworldly and "down home" at the same time. If the rural west has a dark underbelly, this must be the soundtrack for it.
You've likely never heard anything like this but if you are adventurous enough to take a chance, you'll probably find you can't get enough.
Absolutely mesmerizing. Absolutely." -

Re: Nick Cave and others
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 11:58 AMHuh .. what would be the album you would start with? Looks like Slim Cessna is easier to find ...
Have you heard Jim White? I wonder if they're anything like Jim. -

Re: Nick Cave and others
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 1:20 PMI'd start with their newest Blovdy Tenent Trvth Peace, just cuz it's so damn good haha! Here's a quick review of the album...
"I'm often at a loss for how to describe Slim Cessna's Auto Club, but if Darby Crash had played back-porch bluegrass and hill-billy blues instead of punk rock, it would have sounded something like this. If you can't get your head around that description then imagine the Coen Brothers deciding to remake the film "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou" and set it in hell instead of the Deep South. Slim Cessna's Auto Club would be the obvious choice to do the soundtrack. If you still can't grasp the idea, this album is probably more than you can handle. "
And no I haven't heard of Jim...but thanks to you I will now!
Enjoy! -

Mon, May 9, 2005 - 3:36 PMIf you get interested in checking out Jim White, I've been all into Wrong-Eyed Jesus lately. It's the kind of music that makes you glad to have a hangover, like it's an affirmation of something. -
