Well I am happy to see two people have found this tribe so far...I'm curious to know what your favorite album is. I myself can never get enough of Leonard Cohen:Live Songs. Espically the song - Please don't pass me by(A disgrace) recorded live in London 1970.

tough question... i think songs of love & hate is my favorite.
"Myself I long for love and light,
but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?"
-
It's really a tough question. I love them all, but I think Songs of Leonard Cohen is my favourite. With Stories of the Street and Teachers being the songs that make it my fave.

Various Positions, maybe? Certainly not his newer work. (Sorry, Lord!) But yeah, a weakness for Songs, as it was the first album of his I ever heard.

I have to agree with you too about his newer stuff. -

Ooooooooooh I haven't heard the newer stuff yet. What did y'all think of the cover album, Tower of Song? I was pretty impressed overall though not being much of a country gal (you'd never know it with the "y'all"), I was more impressed with, say, the Tori Amos cover of Famous Blue Raincoat and Bono's version of Hallelujah.

I dont know how your defining 'newer' but I love "I'm Your Man"
the cheesy sounding synth contrasted with the growling delivery of the message all combine togther for one hell of an uppercut to the head.
First We'll Take Manhattan..."Thank you for those items that you sent me,the monkey and the plywood violllllin..."

Great tribe! Thanks much. I actually read Leonard Cohen ("The Favorite Game") before I knew he was a songwriter. Weird to think about now. The first record I heard was "The Songs of Leonard Cohen" (on vinyl) and "Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye" remains one of my all time favorite songs. By the way, Robert Flack does a great cover of it on her first album. It’s the only time I’ve ever heard someone do a really decent and beautiful version of one of his songs. -

I thought Suzanne Vega's "Story of Isaac" was pretty good, but in general I have to agree. -

Yeah Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah was pretty good. I don't know the Suzanne Vega and Nina Simone covers though I like them both. I'll look them up. Thanks! (I was mostly thinking of that tribute album from years ago. Maybe I should give it another try.) -

Who else could have created the strongest love story in history? JOAN OF ARC (SofL&H), come on! "...Then Fire, make your body cold-I'm going to give you mine to hold" ahhhh...Instrumental: Tacoma Trailer (Future)
the only one that threw me for a loop was Death of A Ladies Man-and I can't stand other people singing his work-must be the oringal...
Please, I pray we all get to see this man perform some day... I'm sure we'd all camp out for a ticket if given the opportunity! :>) -

I'm thinking a thread is not necessary for least favorite album - surely we can all agree on "Death of a Lady's Man"?
It was a dark, dark day for music. -
-
True, but none of the truly great singer/songwriters of our time (ie since the advent of recorded music) has been without 'farts.' Neil Young - over half of what he puts out is real, total crap. Neither Neil nor Leonard can sing or know how to put a decent ending to a song. But they remain my most revered songwriters and singers nonetheless.
But my fave is Songs of Love and Hate, followed closely by I'm Your Man, Songs of Leonard Cohen, and Songs From a Room, all tied for 2nd place. SoLaH was kind of a peak for the early phase of his career; all his tendencies hammered out into some kind of perfection. -

what's up with all this?
while death of a ladies man was not a 'typical' lc album, it was still packed with beautiful leonard cohen lyrics, and anyone who can't get past the production to the meaning is kinda lost in my mind?
leonard didn't speak differently because phil produced. he spoke his truth, as always, and phil produced the 'sound'.
that album is packed with gems, as are all leonard's adventures into the realm of the heart.
personally, i think death of a ladies man was a pivotal point in leonard's journey from guessing to a more secure, knowledgable, stand. the songs stand....fuck the production.

I think mine has to be Songs of Leonard Cohen, though Songs of Love and Hate is a close second.
I haven't heard much of his recent recordings. -

I'm your man...but then I have not heard all of his albums....

Am I the only one. New Skin for the Old Ceremony is a favorite. There is a War....I mean, what an awesome song. Or how about A Singer Must Die. I love that track soooo much. I sing that one extra loud on busses...especially when it gets to "the rings of her silk...the hinge of her thighs...where I have to go begging in beauty's disguise".
Sigh. It's too late here for me to break out the guitar and sing. I shall have to sleep and attempt it in the morning.
